Each surface requires a different type of paint. Never try to save time at the expense of preparatory work. Some appliances, e.g.. children's furniture, do not require any pre-treatment, one or two coats of paint is enough.
Other, such as wooden exterior pieces, should be properly prepared for painting, by planing, grinding, priming and painting with primer paint, and then cover it with several layers of covering paint. So you need to plan your work carefully.
